Hair is an important feature of a person’s appearance and aids in their attractiveness. Hair loss is an everyday anxiety for those predisposed to male pattern baldness, however there are certain vitamins and supplements that can reverse such balding.

Why do some of us become bald?

The hormone DHT plays a significant role in our hair thinning and eventually making us bald. DHT is short for Dihydrotestosterone and is the male sex hormone. DHT restricts essential vitamins and minerals from reaching the hair follicles located on the scalp. As a result hair maintenance is sabotaged and hair loss soon follows. In certain individuals, hair follicles can be particularly sensitive to DHT. The more sensitive they are, the shorter the follicles lifespan will be.

Ironically, DHT is responsible for hair production on other parts of the body, it is just in the scalp region where it leads to actual hair loss.

Baldness: Genetics or Culture?

Although genetics determine how sensitive someone is to DHT, some people’s lifestyle increases DHT levels, resulting in certain regions of the world having more incidences of hair loss. Thus meaning certain lifestyle traits are creating excess DHT levels and encouraging hair loss, whether you’re genetically predisposed to male pattern baldness or not.

One example is of the people in the west, who happen to have significantly more cases of male pattern baldness than in the east. Dairy, wheat and fructose are high in diets in the west resulting in increased DHT levels, causing inflammation to the scalp area. Those in the west prefer diets rich in soy, sea vegetables and fruits (such as coconuts). These all inhibit the production of DHT, reducing any sensitivity to the hair follicles (slowing hair loss).

Other factors that increase DHT/Balding

Weight Lifting

Lifting weights cause surges in testosterone, which in turn will increase DHT production. Creatine, a weight lifting supplement, has also been linked with increasing DHT.

High Fat Diets

Fats are also required to administer testosterone in the body, and so DHT will also rise, with it being a precursor of testosterone.

When you are stressed the body releases adrenaline. If adrenaline is present in the blood stream for too long, it leads to fatigue, reducing blood flow and circulation. This lack of blood flow to the scalp leaves hair follicles unnourished.

Vitamins/Supplements for Hair Growth

Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto prevents the conversion of testosterone to DHT, thus acting as a DHT-blocker. A dose of 320mg daily has shown to be effective for slowing down hair loss and even encouraging hair growth. Saw palmetto is also effective for treating an enlarged prostate, another side effect of excess DHT levels.

Vitamin E is responsible for building new blood capillaries. New capillaries promote increased blood flow to the scalp, increasing the the life-span of each hair follicle and decreasing any inflammation and sensitivity to DHT.

Vitamin E supplements naturally contain soy, one of the ingredients why people in the east have low rates of baldness.

Vitamin A is essential in maintaining healthy hair. A deficiency in vitamin A correlates to hair loss, irrespective of DHT levels. Skin and nails also deteriorate with a lack of this crucial vitamin.
